What's TechHer?

Launched in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, TechHER is Stella’s Girls’ flagship program designed to break barriers for women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). TechHER provides hands-on coding workshops, mentorship from female STEM professionals, and leadership training tailored to the unique challenges faced by women in Africa.

What makes TechHER unique?

  • African Roots: Founded in Ethiopia, TechHER responds directly to local needs and global STEM gender disparities.

  • Women-Led: All sessions are led by women in STEM, serving as mentors and role models.

  • Global Impact: The program connects participants from Ethiopia and other African nations with international STEM opportunities.

  • Evidence-Based: TechHER uses proven curricula and tracks measurable outcomes in skills, confidence, and career pathways.

Why do we focus on Women?

Despite incredible talent and ambition, women—especially in Africa—face persistent barriers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). TechHER was founded to break these barriers because:

  • The Gender Gap is Real: Globally, women make up less than 30% of the STEM workforce. In Ethiopia and across Africa, this gap is even wider, with cultural, educational, and economic obstacles holding women and girls back from pursuing STEM fields.

  • Diverse Teams Drive Innovation: Studies show that companies and countries with more women in STEM are more creative, innovative, and successful. When women lead, communities thrive.

  • Empowering Women Empowers Communities: When girls and women gain STEM skills and confidence, they become leaders, mentors, and changemakers—lifting up entire families and communities.

  • Role Models Matter: Seeing women succeed in tech inspires the next generation. TechHER provides mentorship from women who’ve walked the path, proving that “if you can see it, you can be it.”

  • Equity is Our Mission: We believe every girl and woman deserves the opportunity to learn, lead, and shape the future—no matter where she’s born.

That’s why TechHER is dedicated to creating a world where Ethiopian—and all African—women and girls are at the forefront of science, technology, and innovation.
