Brief Report On The Awareness Of The December 8, 2020
Senatorial Elections

By Mariama Konneh, ED of Stella's Girls, Liberia

Stella Girls-Liberia is a non-governmental that is involved in Educating and Empowering young women/girls to become better leaders in their communities and country at large in some countries around the world. We have taken on a self-initiative to enlighten some Liberia citizens in some of Monrovia’s densely populated communities concerning the upcoming December 8, 2020 Senatorial Elections.

As an organization, we have involved ourselves in carrying on this awareness wherein we speak to citizens that on election day, they should be very peaceful during the voting process and even afterwards. We are also encouraging and telling citizens that their vote is very important therefore, they should not do the following:
  • Don’t waste it
  • Don’t sell it
  • Don’t be bribed
  • Don’t be influenced by others but make your own choice

In addition to that, we have also involved ourselves in teaching first time voters on how to vote the candidate of their choice on the ballot box.

During our visitations for the past three days in the West-Point, Slipway, and Matadi Communities, we encountered some challenges. Some of these challenges we were faced with were:
  • Some citizens within these communities have decided not to participate in the December 8, 2020 Senatorial Election and that of any elections that will be held in Liberia because most of them are saying that they are suffering and are being fooled by political candidates during election time. Some said when the candidates are being elected for their desired positions, all their many promises that they made during campaign time are not fulfilled.
  • Additionally, some residents or citizens within the mentioned communities said that voting in Liberia generally is a waste of time as there is no improvement in their life status and that their expectations have not been met since the day they started voting in Liberia.
  • Having listened to all their complaints and feelings, we were able to talk to them and also encouraged them to go and take part in the December 8, 2020 Senatorial Elections and that of all other elections that are going to be held in the country. We also encouraged them that they should not feel discouraged and that all hope isn’t lost yet and it is through their votes we can build and have a better Liberia for our children and generations to come.

In conclusion, most of them promised us that they will go to the Polling Stations on December 8, 2020 to cast their votes for the candidate of their choice and we were also appreciated by them for such an initiative that we have undertaken as an organization.
