ADVOCACY FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

advocacy is our collective voice

Stella’s Girls core vision is to educate girls to become social change agents speaking out against gender-based violence, access to reproductive health, access to education, eliminating poverty, and fighting for women's rights. Our members take part in marches, protests, congress hearings, and leadership conferences.

We Stand Together

Campaign against Gender-Based Violence
Girls and women in Liberia face challenges that are incomprehensible in most of the world. The rape-culture against women and children there runs rampant. Recently, the sexual abuse of several toddlers made the news. Young women and men there protested at the Capitol of Liberia, Monrovia for three days, petitioning the government for more protection against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

Stella’s Girls Liberia Chapter was on site, standing with them, all in black.

Enough Is Enough - Stella's Girls Protest Against Gender-Based Violence. We were at the frontlines. They persisted, despite violence on the part of the Liberian Government and Police. Stella's Girls and their allies didn't give up. We never do.
When the Liberian President accepted and adopted the petition two weeks later, it was nominal. Nothing that was agreed to was seen through by the Government there. Mariama and Stella's Girls, Liberia, organized a Voter's Civics Education committee to go from village to village, street to street, letting voters know of their rights and how to stay safe during the November 8th, 2020 election. They posted and handed out flyers to all the young voters they could. The young women and men on the Voter's Civics Education team illustrated grassroots activism at its finest.

We Teach Together

Attack from the outside isn’t the only reason young women and girls fear for their bodies and lives each day. 95% of women and girls there face infection, infertility, and death. All because they lack something most people take for granted, feminine hygiene products. Because of Period Poverty, Liberian women commonly use banana leaves, dirty clothes, sheets, and even cow dung while they have their periods. They can’t go to school because blood will leak through their clothing. Both pads and uniforms are too expensive.

Stella’s Girls taught 25 young women across ECOWAS, or Economic Community of West African States, countries last November to make reusable pads that can last for up to a year. They were also taught how to care appropriately for their bodies, and an invaluable lesson all girls and women deserve. For Menstrual Health Day in May this year, supplied by Stella’s Girls, those 25 women taught 150 more to do the same. Since COVID-19 became a reality, this multifaceted organization has delivered pads, masks, and bleach to girls in Liberian Villages to help them be safe and clean. Each month, more women learn this invaluable skill.

When U.S. schools shut down because of COVID-19, parents all over the country were struggling. They were new to working from home and handling school closures. School is different now; there are new ways of learning and recent technologies to do the learning with. As we navigate the crises that are plaguing the U.S., parents and children need the resources to handle all these dramatic changes.

Stella’s Girls, having run virtual programs for years, saw this and stepped in. They began offering free tutors and mentors during COVID. They continue to educate and mentor young men and women, free of charge. Parents are coached through what they need to help instruct their children. At last count, there were close to 100 volunteers. They are educators, business leaders, and students alike—all giving children and parents reassurance and empowerment to learn and teach from home.

These dedicated volunteers are continuing the work of improving the education needs of hundreds of children throughout the country. From homework help and college applications to providing emotional support and company to children who are lonely during this difficult time, they empower young people to have the lives they deserve. Students learn that they worthy of somebody's time, the most important lesson of them all.

We are always in need of more volunteers to keep our Mentoring and Tutoring programs running. Donations to the programs keep us able to provide necessary supplies for these programs. On September 8, there was also a drive in Southern Maryland, US, to give underprivileged children the school supplies they desperately need.  $1500 of supplies were donated to 150 families that day.

And We Learn Together

We continuously grow and expand our programs, based on research and the feedback of the programs and services we already provide. With open hearts and minds we learn and change Stella's Girls based on this data provided by our Board of Directors, Volunteers, all of us educate and lead each other toward greater awareness and better lives. Every day we grow as people and activists.
